Welcome to Jonestown

Back in the poster game after a little hiatus. "WELCOME TO JONESTOWN" is a 2 night event in Brooklyn, and Queens, depending on how technical you'd like to get, and will feature 8 different bands at 2 different venues: The Kingsland on June 6th and TV Eye on June 7th. I have seen several of these bands and I urge you to get some tickets to see them up close and personal, and to raise some money to help people caught in the middle of a terrible situation.

Road Dog

It's been a crazy 4 months but I finally have time to start posting some of the pieces I created for "Bathhouse". A lot of the work was planned but this piece was such a spur of the moment thing. I think I did the sketch when I was taking a break and in a few days had finished the fleshed-out version and decided to include it with the others. And, after it's all said and done, is definitely one of my favorites in the show. When I look at this it feels like listening to Darkness on the Edge of Town while watching Rumblefish. Advertising For Coffee

Soooo, I've been doing these a-frame drawings for Gimme Coffee in Brooklyn for about a year now and people seem to get a kick out of them, which made me think I should start photographing them and putting them on some one of my sites. I don't usually try to put too much thought into them, except for a few here and there, which keeps them pretty enjoyable to do. The more spontaneous and ridiculous, the better. It's only when it comes to attempting to erase the marker that an insane rage starts to build inside of me. I wish I could share all of them, but here are the ones I've done since I started to document this job.

The infamous Iggy Pop back-bend he used to do at his live shows. I included a flipped photo just in case someone really wanted to see it.

Some more of the faces that I've been doing on a daily basis. Not sure how I managed to draw Rick Ross, Willie Nelson and John Steinbeck all in a row, but there must be some weird underlying connection that caused me to move from one to the next.

Hank Revisited

Went back to the Hank Williams piece and tried to get it a little bit closer to something that resembled a finished illustration. I try not to rework drawings after I begin work on another project, to me it's just retreading old ground, I think it's easier for me to accept the mistakes and just work past them with a new piece. But, I had spent so much time on this one that it felt like I had just left it unfinished, without trying to fully solve the problem. At the moment it feels completed, but either way, I'll have to move on this time.

I've also included some warm up sketches I try to do before I work on a more involved piece. These tend to help me loosen up or give me idea's for bigger projects.

This is Why No One Takes Me Seriously

A piece I recently finished that is an ode to a bunch of different things. But, mostly an ode to the music of Queen.

I had done these two sketches, that are below, a few months apart, and wanted to create finished pieces from them, but I didn't want to re-draw Freddie Mercury, which makes no sense to me, and I also didn't want to be completely tasteless with the words that I was going to include in the banner that is blocking young, impressionable minds from viewing all that is natural, yet considered indecent. So, I married the two into one big, immature creation saluting skateboarding, the imminent danger that is naturally associated with it, one of the greatest songs ever, evenings in the park under some sort of atomic sunset, and of course, birds.

There was some electric yellow all over this piece, but was too shy to really show off once it knew it was going to be making an appearance on here.

Wolfie: The Man, The Myth, The Legend

There's too many awesome stories about this unique creature to unload on this blog, but I tried as hard as I could to get this portrait to do him some sort of justice. But, in the end, as much as I struggled to really capture him the best I could, a 12 x 15 sheet of bristol board cannot control him, he's just too much for a mere sheet of paper to handle. I guess some people are just born that way.

Below is the sketch I did that put this project into motion.

Sex Can Still Be Awkward

About a month ago I was invited to a dinner party for a few local artists where we would all hang out, have a few drinks, or more, and then enjoy dinner together. There was a little catch to the event; we all had to bring a piece with us, that dealt with the idea of sexual energy, for a critique after dinner. It kind of threw me for a bit since I had never done a piece dealing with that subject matter. I really thought about it for a while and eventually got something. The night was a fun time and everyone had an interesting take on the subject. A big thanks to Tom Buechner for having me there.
