Soul Clapping, Dancing, and Sweating into 2020

Jonathan Toubin's Soul Clap & Dance-Off rolls on into a new year and it's coming at you quick this Saturday, January 18th at the Market Hotel with Patti Smith Group guitarist, historian, and producer Lenny Kaye guest DJing alongside Jonathan. We went with the iconic Otis Redding red suit look from his Live in Europe album to kick things off this year. Did this one under a very tight deadline but had a lot of fun doing it and it may be one of my new favorites. Sometimes the quick ones end up being that way due to the lack of time to dwell on decisions so you tend to lean more on your intuition. Process pics and link to tickets below.

Tina Turner for thee Soul Clap & Dance-Off!

Back at it with a new Soul Clap poster. Nothin' like Tina Turner & The Ikettes shakin' a tail feather to let you know this is gonna be a good one. Jonathan Toubin is back at Madison Square Park this summer and he has Ural Thomas & The Pain performing with him this time around. Should be a great night so be sure to get there on July 19th!

I wanted to revisit the look of the James Brown poster that I had done a few years ago for this one. All of the dynamic jagged edges, motion and strong lights and darks have really made people gravitate to that piece. For the sake of grabbing people's attention I felt like a similar vibe would serve this poster well but I do feel like it became its own image in the process rather than a homage or anything along those lines.

Thee Soul Clap Poster Show

In un-related Bathhouse news: I have some of my Soul Clap and Dance Off illustrations hanging up at the Gimme! Coffee on Lorimer St. in Brooklyn. It's the big Soul Clap 10 year anniversary bash this Friday, March 3rd so we are prepping everyone with a showing of some of my poster work. It's kind of a best of/ the hits so far assortment. Stop in and check them out all neatly placed in a row before they return to the dark corner of my studio where no one ever looks at them, or shows them any love.

10 years of Soul Clappin'

This poster was a crazy one. Luckily for me Jonathan had set up something to work from so I guess I should call this more of a Ashworth/Toubin collab. I've used so many of these revue posters for inspiration on lay out, font choices, color schemes it was nice to go and do one down to the tiniest detail. It wasn't easy doing all those portraits but it was fun to stand back when it was all completed and feel like I was looking at something that could be from another time.

This Soul Clap is a special one: Jonathan Toubin is going to be leaving all of his records at home and the music is going to be coming from all live acts for his big 10 year anniversary bash. There's also going to be a few surprise guests as well and it wouldn't be complete without the dance off you all know and love. Don't sleep and get your tickets HERE while you still can. Huge congratulations and thank you to Jonathan Toubin for 10 years of the Soul Clap and Dance Off and continually asking me to do these posters.

Home Sweet Home

New poster for Jonathan Toubin but, surprise! It's not for the Soul Clap parties. This is for his weekly gig at Home Sweet Home, over in Chinatown. We are gonna attempt something a little different with these ones; They will be done quarterly, I think weekly would kill me, and they will be printed out as handbills, instead of just advertised online. Jonathan wanted to give people something they can hang onto and tack on their walls at home, or tuck aside as a memento from their wild and crazy nights dancing it up in the big, bad city. Still believin' in the importance of the tactile. All the info is on the poster so you know where to be on Friday nights. Process pics below.

Oooooooh yeaaaaa!!! Fire detail.

Notice a little difference in this supposed "finished" pic from the top pic? Yep. I fucked up a little bit. Nothin a little arts and crafts couldn't fix.
