Sunday Soul Scream t-shirts have arrived, featuring both illustrations that I created to advertise Jonathan Toubin's annual summer residency. They are available at Our Wicked Lady in Brooklyn, NY for $20.

 

Sunday Soul Scream Summer 2023 Edition

Summer is approaching so that means another round of Jonathan Toubin's Sunday Soul Scream at Our Wicked Lady in East Williamsburg's industrial zone is upon us.

We bounced back and forth between using these party frogs and King Kong but the frogs just looked like too much fun to pass on. Pulled some inspiration from mid-century design on hotel bar matchbooks while still keeping it recognizable as my Soul Scream poster work. I'm always battling with my desire to make these with a more minimal palette every year (2-3 colors max) and my inevitable slide into using 5, 6, 7 + colors. It's just the battle I go through with wanting to render something completely and create a striking graphic image.

Anyways, the party kicks off on Sunday May 28th and goes on every summer Sunday up to Sept 3rd. Be sure to follow the Sunday Soul Scream instagram to see what bands and guests dee jays will be appearing every Sunday night.

 

Sunday Soul Scream 2022

Hoo doggie, my eyes almost melted out of my skull while working on this one..this started out as 2 people dancing on the roof to this full blown party you see before you. Jonathan Toubin is bringing the Sunday Soul Scream back to Our Wicked Lady for summer 2022 and we really wanted to remind people about the late dancing that goes down on the roof every Sunday night so we dug through close to 50 photos from past parties and I cherry picked my favorite poses to sell this baby. Who knows, if you've ever been to a Soul Scream, YOU may be tucked in there somewhere. On a side note: I'm realizing more and more that I really like to personify the sun and moon in my illustrations and even create a narrative between the two. Sometimes they are bitter rivals but this time around things seem ok between them. 

The party kicks off this Memorial Day weekend and continues every Summer Sunday up to Labor Day. Be sure to check in with Our Wicked Lady and the Sunday Soul Scream instagram accounts for updates on the weekly rotating cast of bands and surprise guest dj's. Details and process pics below.

Missing my Food Spots

Here's a little group of food paintings I worked on back in April/May when I was going through some major withdrawal thinking about all the places I liked to eat/drink at before the pandemic shut them down. I'm glad that some places are able to start to reopen but I'm gonna need some time I think before I can comfortably revisit my old spots. At least the corner stores/bodegas/delis don't seem to have a shortage of ice cream sandwiches.

American Illustration 39 Chosen

Happy to report that a few illustrations I made in 2019 have been chosen by the judges of American Illustration 39 to appear in this years online archive. Amidst all the craziness of the last couple months in NYC I felt guilty for not jumping for joy, which I usually do when AI emails me that my work has been accepted, but it does really mean a lot to have my work acknowledged by the judges and I'm very honored to be included in this year's batch of winners. So, I would like to say Thank You to all the judges this year. This news did brighten my week. 

I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe out there. Looking at the 3 pieces that were chosen makes me look forward to the days when we can go see live music together again, dance at Jonathan Toubin's parties and sit together in open spaces next to all our friends without having to wear masks. 

That rocket ship should have been a loaf of sourdough. If anyone is running out of space in their kitchen and needs to unload some bread they've been baking, hit me up. I will gladly be a taste tester for all your sourdough tests.

Gimme! Coffee: Birthdays and Cats

Gimme! Coffee on Lorimer St. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn turned 16 on January 3rd and in honor of the big day I drew up a lil' something for their marquee and an a-frame to let all the people on the street know how much they were appreciated. It's pretty insane to think they've made it 16 years in this neighborhood. Not much of looks how it used to and it definitely doesn't feel the way it once did but it's nice to see some of the old guard still hanging in there. They are also donating a portion of their bean sales from this quarter to the ASPCA and Bushwick Street Cats so I got another chance to draw up some cats for their a-frame. Not neon ones this time however. 

Yaki Tiki A-Frames

Just whipped up a batch of a-frames for the new restaurant, YAKI TIKI in the Greepoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. The restaurant kicked off on Saturday, June 1st and we had limited time to get all the signs completed so I spent an entire afternoon churning these out as I was fed ice cream, beer, coffee and some pizza as I wrapped up the menu. I was psyched when they mentioned they enjoyed my neon work and wanted to shoot for something along those lines. Combining that with the kitsch of vintage tiki bar illustrations was right up my alley. Thanks again to George for asking me to contribute. The next Soul Clap & Dance-Off is just around the corner and as the hot and heavy stink of NYC summer penetrates our nostrils, who better to have grace the poster than the world's dirtiest rapper, a man who has sang a song or two about penetration, the late great BLOWFLY!
