The Haunted Hop!

New poster I cooked up for Jonathan Toubin and Kid Congo Powers's Haunted Hop tour kicking off on October 25th in Chicago. We decided very early on that since Kid Congo had been a member of The Cramps, that doing a homage to one of their album covers, and possibly one of the most iconic in the history of music, was the perfect direction. Shadow Dancing

Whipped up a quick one for Jonathan Toubin's Soul Clap & Dance Off at Baby's All Right in Williamsburg this Saturday the 23rd. Jonathan wanted to let his fabulous shadow dancers get a moment in the spotlight so I did my best James Bond/In like Flint sort of homage for this one. There will also be a 16mm projections from Spencer Bewley going on during the dancing so it was very fitting for the shadow dancers to be featured on this illustration.

Like a Modern Cowboy

Something new-ish. Thinkin' there's going to be a triptych happening out of this piece. More will eventually follow until the exciting story is complete.

New York Night Train Day

New poster for a special curated day of music from the amazing Jonathan Toubin. New York Night Train Day will be taking place on September 10th at the 15th annual South Street Seaport Music Festival. The recently reformed The Make-Up will be headlining so, of course none other than Ian Svenonious is gracing the poster. Thanks again to Jonathan Toubin.

Everything Must Go!

New one for fun. July was a fairly quiet month in terms of freelance work so it was nice to dive back into the pit of personal projects. Still trying to incorporate that love of all things neon into the usual way I work.

Bad Boy Coffee Club

New one I did for fun. I love seeing the most masculine lookin' tough guy come into a coffee shop and order the sweetest thing on the menu.

Tina Turner for thee Soul Clap & Dance-Off!

Back at it with a new Soul Clap poster. Nothin' like Tina Turner & The Ikettes shakin' a tail feather to let you know this is gonna be a good one. Jonathan Toubin is back at Madison Square Park this summer and he has Ural Thomas & The Pain performing with him this time around. Should be a great night so be sure to get there on July 19th!

I wanted to revisit the look of the James Brown poster that I had done a few years ago for this one. All of the dynamic jagged edges, motion and strong lights and darks have really made people gravitate to that piece. For the sake of grabbing people's attention I felt like a similar vibe would serve this poster well but I do feel like it became its own image in the process rather than a homage or anything along those lines.

Singin' in the Rain

I was house sitting a few years ago and was messin around in my sketchbook one day, just doing some portraits of people I'm interested in, and there was one Tom Waits portrait I did that I was particularly happy with. Fast forward a few years and now that I'm messing around with all these night scenes and neon lights I figured I'd push the sketch into new territory. I'm trying to find a balance between all the neon paintings and my detailed line work and this piece seemed like it'd be a good exercise for this. I also visited New Orleans while I was working on this piece and I felt like the vibe of the nightlife there helped me create a more specific mood here. 

My sketches/color studies sometimes feel like they come dangerously close to being better than the finished piece. This was one of those times.

Thomas Rinaldi's book on the history of neon lights in NYC has been an endless source of inspiration and great for reference material.
