GEM SPA x Left Field NYC

I whipped up this drawing of an egg cream soda (and drank a few still life references) for a t-shirt collaboration between the iconic East Village spot GEM SPA and menswear brand LEFT FIELD. Originally the plan was to use the sales of the shirt to help Gem Spa keep their lights on and get through the pandemic until they could reopen but, unfortunately with no business coming in and still having to pay East Village rent, they had to close the store for good. 

It was then decided that Left Field would take their share of the proceeds from the t-shirt sales and donate it to LESPI - a non-profit that seeks to preserve the historic streetscapes and buildings of Manhattan's East Village, Lower East Side, Chinatown, Little Italy and the Bowery.

Down on the corner

Still keeping the dream alive with the bodega cat drawings. I'm trying to shake it up a little bit so things don't get too repetitive here. In college I was turned on to Ronald Searle's cat books and later on I noticed Ralph Steadman had done one as well and I'm pretty sure Edward Gorey placed quite a few cats in his illustrations. There are probably a bunch of other illustrators I'm not aware of that have some affinity for drawing them as well. I guess illustrators and cats just have some weird, magical bond, or maybe it's just that we appreciate a pet that lets us work as long as we please.

Soul Clappin' at Bowery Ballroom

I didn't have a working computer for 4 months so, sorry for the insane amount of posts coming up lately. Just trying to catch everyone up with what has happened in that time. This Soul Clap & Dance Off poster of Screamin' Jay Hawkins was whipped up about a week after i returned from Europe. The event has come and gone so unfortunately I can't let y'all know about this awesome upcoming party, just one you may have missed out on. Big thinks again to Jonathan Toubin. Process pics below.

Well, there it is, the first wave of neon bodega cat signs. This series was created in a very busy month due to a deadline for show submissions but, it was definitely one of those, "I felt totally crazy but had a great time doing it." Now, let's all go back in time to the end of September and look at where these babies were before I really dove in. Thanks to all those rainy nights when the neon signs really show off in store windows and in the reflections on the wet streets. Also, big thanks to Thomas E. Rinaldi's blog New York Neon.

Soul Clap and Dance-Off

Wrapped this back on Valentine's Day but waited a little until the show started getting advertised.  Jonathan Toubin throws some excellent parties and I'm psyched that he asked me to illustrate a poster for one of his infamous shows. I was lucky enough to judge one of the dance contests last year and it was intense. Let this quote from Vice sum it better than anybody else can:

"Jonathan Toubin is the only person we can call a "professional DJ" without involuntarily making a jack-off motion with our hand... His parties are like what Ancient Stonehenge was like if it was, as archaeologists theorize, filled with people dressed many times better than you completely losing their shit." (VICE, 2010)

Life feels a bit more complete; I finally finished my ode to C.H.U.D. Ever since I did that little head study that was posted a few months ago, I've been wantin' to get around to doing a fleshed out illustration of a C.H.U.D. Welp, here it is.
