Left Field x Prime Denim Label

A few months ago I had the opportunity to work with Left Field NYC again on a denim label for a collaborative jean with Prime. The image definitely went through some changes, as you'll see in the sketches below, until we finally settled on "the one". Originally, there was going to be a large sacred rock in Australia in the background but that got nixed and then we went for a few different versions with a wave crash and then a shark until we got the composition that included both.

The final product came out with black ink on a tan patch but I had the classic Levi's label in my head when I did this color study in red. It was still helpful though in figuring out the contrast for the final illustration. It was also tricky working on something that was going to be shrunken down to the size of a business card because I am such a detail oriented person but I think I was able to pull the reigns where it was needed. Probably could have a little more but, whadda ya gunna do?

The jeans are available on Prime's site and they are a pretty penny but knowing the quality of Left Field's denim I would bet these puppies are totally worth it. The craft and attention to detail in their products is really amazing and I'm stoked to work with such a reputable brand. Thanks again to Christian McCann for the opportunity to work on something I never considered taking a shot at illustrating and, in the end, being really happy I did it.

Comin' down the line

I'm still here internet! Been deep in the studio cave but here are some sneak peeks of some projects I'll hopefully be able to show in full sooner rather than later.

Surfing the Rat

My friend had an unfortunate experience biking to work in Brooklyn one early morning, when a rat decided to make a break for it but tragically collided with his front tire, jamming itself in between rubber and concrete for a few terrifying seconds. After some horrible squealing and squeaking, the rat shot out from under his tire and my friend could continue on to work, shaken no doubt, but eager to tell his tale. And that is where, "Surfing the Rat" was born.

Fake Bands: Part 1

I've been collecting a list of band names over time and I've started to illustrate them recently. I'm slowly working on them in my spare time so they'll trickle in when I get the chance. I hope no one comes across these and is actually in a band with one of these names. It's been kind of fun making up fake back stories and imagining what they might sound like.

I liked Blood Wave, but I did a second version because I felt like it looked too much like the thing these guys have going and I don't want to step on their toes since I love what they do.

Below is the second version, which I ended up liking even more than the first. It all works out.
 Junkie leaves.

And I did this little drawing of Harvey Keitel. Older face attached to a movie reference from his younger days.
