The Haunted Hop featuring Roky Erickson!

It's time of the year again for Jonathan Toubin to throw his monstrous HAUNTED HOP  Halloween party which means it's time for me to gear up for some marathon illustrating. I was psyched when I heard ROKY ERICKSON was going to be headlining the show this year because I knew this would mean I would get to draw him a few times AND get to see him live on Halloween! Oh, happy day. If you're unfamiliar with Roky, I recommend checking out The 13th Floor Elevators albums and then dig into his solo catalog, especially the albums, The Evil One, Gremlins Have Pictures, and Halloween 1979-81, purely for the face melting version of "Bloody Hammer". This poster was done with a quick turnaround to get the initial announcement out so for the big announcement I'm hoping to really knock it out of the park in honor of Roky! Some process pics below.

"I'm here to sock some soul to your ass"

The next Soul Clap & Dance-Off is just around the corner and as the hot and heavy stink of NYC summer penetrates our nostrils, who better to have grace the poster than the world's dirtiest rapper, a man who has sang a song or two about penetration, the late great BLOWFLY! It's all going down on September 15th at Diviera Drive in Williamsburg. Click LINK for tickets and details. Thanks again to Jonathan Toubin. Check thee process beelow.

Always gotta have some rats in the mix.

Left Field

New illustration for the 20 year anniversary of Queens-based menswear company Left Field. There's a big influence from the coal mining gear and tough workwear worn in the 20th century so I tried to make this look a little gritty by putting some charcoal down and just smudging it all over the coal miner. I feel like my work used to look way dirtier years ago and at first I was a little bummed that it's been looking cleaner but I think I've just learned to restrain myself and try to use certain materials on a piece when it calls for it. Anyways, it was fun to rub some charcoal all over this one. It was also brutally hot the whole week I worked on this and I feel like that really crept into the look of this poster. Every time I look at this illustration now I just feel the oppressive heat of summer days in the city. Be sure to swing by the next time you're in Ridgewood and check out their rad looking store on Woodward Avenue and grab some goods. Thanks to owner, Christian McCann for hitting me up for this project.

"Ain't I'm Clean?"

New Soul Clap & Dance-off poster of Rufus Thomas doin' the funky chicken. I try to keep the colors to a minimum on these posters, and it usually doesn't happen, but that Funky Chicken album cover is too cool not to make a nod to. Grab your tickets HERE!

MTN GODS!

Back at it with those circular pieces after some time apart! I was recently approached by 2 rad guys, Phil and Charlie, about creating this very over-the-top 70's/80's metal album cover inspired illustration for the homepage of their new project MTN GODS. It seemed like the three of us have a fondness for a lot of the same albums and album covers of that era so figuring out a satisfying solution for this illustration came very easily. Had a lot of fun with this one and since it was my 2nd illustration this past month that was going to be inverted there wasn't so much start and stop on this one. Be sure to check out their site and all their cool projects. Process shots and all that jazz below!

The First 6 Months

When I first started making these illustrations for Jonathan Toubin's Elsewhere shows it was originally discussed as being a 6 month residency. Well, 6 months are here and the train is gonna keep on rolling monthly right where it's been for the first half of the year. In honor of continuing these monthly parties here are the first 6 posters I've created for the Soul Clap & Dance-Off at Elsewhere.
