Sun Ra Arkestra at the Soul Clap & Dance-Off!

The big 11th anniversary bash for Jonathan Toubin's Soul Clap & Dance-Off is gearing up and it's gonna be a wild one. Tried to get a little extra crazy with this month's poster since the Sun Ra Arkestra is gonna be showing up as the big headliner for the night. James Chance and The Contortions, Ice Balloons and Ryan Sawyer are also gonna be tearing it up on the stage aaaaand Kid Congo Powers is guest djing. Draggin Ass

Worked this one up a couple weeks ago in between my monthly Soul Clap poster project. I have this tendency to want to fill the entire image with detail and color so every now and then I try to restrain myself with illustrations like this one. I have this dream idea of the perfect illustrations that I want to make and I feel like this is somewhat closer to that idea. Not subject matter wise but, balancing tight and loose and positive and negative.

Here we go! Month number 2 of the Soul Clap & Dance-Off residency at Elsewhere in Brooklyn, NY. Jonathan Toubin got La Luz to headline this month so we decided on using another all-star, all-girl group for this month's poster: The Motown hitmakers, The Marvelettes. Really enjoying drawing all these people bustin' moves in the background and always love working up a good pink/green color combo.

I was moving my studio in the process of finishing up this illustration sooo, things got a little bootleg on the kitchen table. All worked out though in the end.
