"Character and Narrative" the Final Four

These are the final 4 pieces I made for "Character and Narrative" the group show that Travis Winters, Tom Sarmo, John Van Horn and myself participated in at the Foothills Art Center back in August of 2019. Just getting 3 of the 4 scanned in now due to the tight schedule I was under with wrapping them up; They're slightly larger than I usually work and I had 5 days to complete them before they had to be framed. I've included a couple process pics but due to the 15 hour days huddled over my table, racing against the clock, I don't have much exciting details to show. Nothing like a deadline to get you motivated.

I think there's a narrative running through all these pieces. I wanted them to create this timeline dealing with our history of vanity, misinterpretation of text and images, instant gratification, and the banal things we do either out of lack of thought, need to be liked or desired, or fear of being out of the loop and how modern life has amplified a lot of these insecurities.

American Illustration 38 Book

My Kool Keith Soul Clap & Dance-Off illustration for Jonathan Toubin's 2018 Elsewhere residency was chosen to appear in the American Illustration 38 Book and it finally arrived this past Friday! It's a huge honor and humbling to be included in this big beautiful book with so many other amazing illustrators. I've included some pics of my favorite pieces below to give you an idea of the great work in it.

Soul Clapping, Dancing, and Sweating into 2020

Jonathan Toubin's Soul Clap & Dance-Off rolls on into a new year and it's coming at you quick this Saturday, January 18th at the Market Hotel with Patti Smith Group guitarist, historian, and producer Lenny Kaye guest DJing alongside Jonathan. We went with the iconic Otis Redding red suit look from his Live in Europe album to kick things off this year. Did this one under a very tight deadline but had a lot of fun doing it and it may be one of my new favorites. Sometimes the quick ones end up being that way due to the lack of time to dwell on decisions so you tend to lean more on your intuition. Process pics and link to tickets below.

Gimme! Coffee: Birthdays and Cats

Gimme! Coffee on Lorimer St. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn turned 16 on January 3rd and in honor of the big day I drew up a lil' something for their marquee and an a-frame to let all the people on the street know how much they were appreciated. It's pretty insane to think they've made it 16 years in this neighborhood. Not much of looks how it used to and it definitely doesn't feel the way it once did but it's nice to see some of the old guard still hanging in there. They are also donating a portion of their bean sales from this quarter to the ASPCA and Bushwick Street Cats so I got another chance to draw up some cats for their a-frame. Not neon ones this time however.
