NY Night Train New Years Ball

The 15th annual NY Night Train New Years Ball is upon us and here is my new poster for it! You'll notice in some process pics there is already a poster with Kid Congo Powers that I am using for reference. Well, last year, Kid was scheduled to headline the party but had to back out last minute due to an injury. He's all healed up and back for the party this year so I created a new background with new information and just slapped the drawing of him from last year's poster onto this one. 

It was a bit tricky, color-wise, working on it without a central figure this time but I think I got it put together ok. I stuck with the pink and green elements that I pulled from the Gun Club classic, Fire of Love but wanted to add some elements that referenced another one of their albums: The 1984 classic, Las Vegas Story.

NYNT 14th Annual New Years Ball (unused version)

I mentioned in my NYNT New Years Ball post that there was another poster I made that had to be scrapped so, without further ado, here is first version featuring the one and only, Kid Congo Powers.

Unfortunately Kid had an accident and had to cancel his appearance so Jonathan Toubin and I got to work on a new version (the one now featuring The Mystery Lights) so we could get word out before people started to make NYE plans that didn’t involve going to TV EYE. 

Since Kid just put out his memoir “Some New Kind of Kick” which I shamefully have to admit I haven’t read yet but, it’s next on my list, Jonathan wanted me to do a drawing of the picture of Kid that was shot by Marcy Blaustein and used as the cover photo. I used the Gun Club’s Fire of Love album as an inspiration for the color scheme and placed little references around the poster - cacti, skulls, Kid’s very own custom glasses by Shady Spex. I had also I imagined drawing a giant white spider web in the background of the poster (you’ll see little spiders creeping around the piece and notice the tracing paper with the web laid over the poster if you scroll through the pics) in an attempt to reference the song “Spider Baby” he put out with his current band, Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds but time constraints put a stop to that. And, honestly it may saved the poster from looking a little too busy. 

Sooo, if you’ve actually read down this far and are unfamiliar with Kid’s legacy, go grab his memoir “Some New Kind of Kick” and be blown away by how many iconic bands he has been a part of and educate the youngsters a little on whose guitar they are hearing while they practice that viral dance from Netflix’s ‘Wednesday’.

 

Soul Clap & Dance-Off 12 Year Anniversary/Kid Congo Powers Birthday Bash!

Another March means another year that Jonathan Toubin's Soul Clap & Dance-Off party keeps chugging along! This is the 12th year and this baby keeps getting better and better. It's also music icon Kid Congo Powers' 60th Birthday bash so it's going to be a night of maximum celebrations. Link to tickets are HERE.

This anniversary party also marks the 5th year that Jonathan and I have been working on these posters together. I've included the first ever poster I did for him below. There was definitely a lack of Jonathan's aesthetic in the piece but I think it still managed to capture the fun spirit of the party. 

Haunted Hop Vol.2: HALLOWEEN NIGHT PARTY!

Well, this is the most text I have ever put on a poster, and probably will be that way for the rest of my time. Maybe. There's a lot going on here so don't forget to take a break, get some water and food, and then come back to digest the rest of this information. Had a lot of fun with this one. The Haunted Hop!

New poster I cooked up for Jonathan Toubin and Kid Congo Powers's Haunted Hop tour kicking off on October 25th in Chicago. We decided very early on that since Kid Congo had been a member of The Cramps, that doing a homage to one of their album covers, and possibly one of the most iconic in the history of music, was the perfect direction.
