Sunday Soul Scream 2024

I had quite an undertaking recently with this year's Sunday Soul Scream advertising project but my hand miraculously lived to tell the tale. This isn't the first time we've done 2 illustrations (one main poster and one calendar poster) to help promote Jonathan Toubin's summer residency at Our Wicked Lady but this calendar poster was definitely the most intense due to the amount of acts Jonathan got for this summer's events. We had been toying around with the idea of using King Kong imagery for a few years and we finally did the damn thing and I'm happy with how we pulled it off. I especially love that we used a narrative to connect the 2 images, which we have never really done before.

Sunday Soul Scream: Part 2

Whipped up this 2nd illustration for some Sunday Soul Scream surprises I can't mention yet but we are at least able to disclose all the bands that are schedule to play for the remainder of the summer event.

Sunday Soul Scream Summer 2023 Edition

Summer is approaching so that means another round of Jonathan Toubin's Sunday Soul Scream at Our Wicked Lady in East Williamsburg's industrial zone is upon us.

We bounced back and forth between using these party frogs and King Kong but the frogs just looked like too much fun to pass on. Pulled some inspiration from mid-century design on hotel bar matchbooks while still keeping it recognizable as my Soul Scream poster work. I'm always battling with my desire to make these with a more minimal palette every year (2-3 colors max) and my inevitable slide into using 5, 6, 7 + colors. It's just the battle I go through with wanting to render something completely and create a striking graphic image.

Anyways, the party kicks off on Sunday May 28th and goes on every summer Sunday up to Sept 3rd. Be sure to follow the Sunday Soul Scream instagram to see what bands and guests dee jays will be appearing every Sunday night.

 

Gem Spa Egg Cream: Part 2

Took my Egg Cream drawing I did for the Gem Spa x Left Field NYC t-shirt collaboration and jazzed it up a bit more. I wanted to do some sort of flash sheet inspired illustration of what St. Marks means to me. I spent a good chunk of time there when I first moved to the city since it was in walking distance from the apartment I was staying at, had cheap food, and was great for people watching while I scarfed down my meal on the curb. I even got kicked a few times by a crust punk during one of my visits. Such sweet authentic memories.

Left Field

New illustration for the 20 year anniversary of Queens-based menswear company Left Field. There's a big influence from the coal mining gear and tough workwear worn in the 20th century so I tried to make this look a little gritty by putting some charcoal down and just smudging it all over the coal miner. I feel like my work used to look way dirtier years ago and at first I was a little bummed that it's been looking cleaner but I think I've just learned to restrain myself and try to use certain materials on a piece when it calls for it. Anyways, it was fun to rub some charcoal all over this one. It was also brutally hot the whole week I worked on this and I feel like that really crept into the look of this poster. Every time I look at this illustration now I just feel the oppressive heat of summer days in the city. PMS & THE MOOD SWINGS

I've been sitting on this one for almost a year now but, the time has finally come for the big announcement: The PMS & THE MOOD SWINGS album is being released JUNE 1st on BURGER RECORDS!!! I loved working on this piece, not only because I know these people but, I love Coney Island, and putting these 2 things together was a dream come true. This is the time first time I've been able to illustrate almost every aspect of the album art and it was a lot of fun to tie this whole thing together.
